Spectrum Kachin Team contributed their hard work on International Ozone Preservation Day


In 2017, September 16, Spectrum Kachin team coordinated with Environmental Conservation Department and organized a great event in very important day of International Ozone Preservation at City Hall, Myitkyina.

Myanmar is already a member of a number of other international agreements including the 1993 Montreal Protocol to regulate the use of ozone-depleting substances. International Ozone Preservation Day was celebrated in every State and Region of Myanmar.

This year’s Ozone Day theme is “CARING FOR ALL LIVES UNDER THE SUN” and 2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol. According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message, Montreal Protocol saves millions of people from skin cancer and cataracts each year, and the Protocol helps combat poverty, address climate change and protect the food chain.  The treaty also creates new business opportunities and it will save the global economy over $2 trillion by 2050.

At Nay Pyi Daw ceremony, U Khin Maung Yi, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Resources and Environmental Conservation said that Myanmar is working with other international countries to reduce the usage of ozone-depleting substances and limit importing of those substances. Moreover, the government will conduct education campaigns and skill-building workshops for the people who work in the industry of handling materials that can damage ozone layer.

In Myitkyina ceremony, Dr. Khet Aung , Chief Minister of Kachin State Government said, “ We are working together with relevant ministries to raise awareness on limit use of hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) supplements, and reducing HCFC use in manufacturing.”

Another exciting green program added in Kachin International Ozone Day Event is Biking Trip from Department of Sport to Myitkyina City Hall. Kachin local people actively participated in biking campaign. And Kachin Spectrum team supported the participants with Spectrum T-shirts.

Estimated 400 people participated in Kachin International Ozone Day Event including State Ministers, MPs, government officials, INGOs, NGOs, CSOs, Teachers, Students and local community. And awards were given to students who won the competition of high- level composition focused on the theme of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

Spectrum Kachin team leader, Ja Bauk said, “We are very proud to organize the Ozone day event with Kachin ECD, Wildlife Conservation Society, and other Kachin local groups. And Spectrum always participates in environmental ceremonies and events as an active partner with government departments. We are very satisfied to see people become more and more interested in event like Ozone day. It is a sign that our environmental awareness programs has succeed to some extent.”
