Protect, Respect, Remedy Framework

"A key tool for governments and businesses to implement respective responsibilities and manage human rights risks."

The framework covers all rights and all companies in all jurisdictions. It is also known as the United Nations (UN) Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights.

The principles were reached by consensus after six years working through issues between government, business and civil society. The process was led by the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Business and Human Rights, John Ruggie, and the framework is also known as the Ruggie Principles.

The principles cover:

  • The State Duty to Protect Human Rights
  • The Corporate Responsibility to Respect Human Rights
  • The need for greater Access to Remedy for victims of business-related abuse.

The UN Guiding Principles are considered a key tool for governments and businesses to implement their respective responsibilities and manage human rights risks. They are a foundation for sustainable enterprises, markets and sustainable development.

As with other human rights principles, they are essentially about treating people with dignity.
