Rubber Industry

"We have studied industry productivity, processing and quality issues, as well as overall industry sustainability."

Spectrum's work on rubber has included plantation mapping, looking at industry projections, examining land factors, forestry practices and environmental issues, along with labour and skills factors.

We have studied industry productivity, processing and quality issues, as well as overall industry sustainability.

In 2013 the International Rubber Study Group began a project to further define Sustainable Natural Rubber (SNR) Criteria and Indicators, as part of a large industry project.

Some of Spectrum's overview and assessment work was summarised in Social & Corporate Responsibility in Plantation Development, a presentation made at the Rubber Industry Summit in Phnom Penh in March 2014.

The presentation covers summary points specific to the rubber industry, particularly in Myanmar, general factors related to land, agribusiness and plantation projects and suggestions for extra inclusions in the Sustainable Natural Rubber projects focus areas.

General plantation sector Best Practice Guidelines that exist were highlighted. These include:

  • CFS Guidelines (2012 Conference on Food Security Voluntary Guidelines - Responsible Governance of Tenure: of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security)
  • Ruggie or UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights
  • FPIC (Free Prior and Informed Consent)
  • Labor Codes, RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil - Guidelines)
  • CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Standards and Grievance Procedures.
